What a family algebra placement test has to measure

A learner who only follows the steps can still pass a page of identical equations. They cannot keep passing when the same relationship is a graph, a table, a worked sequence, or a short story. That is the placement signal a parent can use next week, without a cut score.

What this algebra placement test covers

The live check covers five concepts from Algebra Foundations, the core moves of early algebra a learner needs before Algebra 1: combining like terms, one-step addition equations, unit rate, linear slope, and translating a story into an equation. It is not college algebra, not intermediate algebra, and not a tour of every high-school topic.

Each concept is shown as equations, graphs, and tables. That is how a family test separates understanding from procedure. The round does not retry until the matching card is found, so the result is a sample of what they knew, not of how long they kept guessing.

A parent self-check: is this the right algebra placement test?

1. Do you need a score for a college or a campus placement office?

   Then this is the wrong test. Use ALEKS, Accuplacer, or the exam your college names. A family Readiness Check will not be accepted in their place.

2. Are you trying to see whether a middle-schooler understands the ideas Algebra 1 will use?

   Then this is the right test. The live check samples those ideas in more than one form and reports which ones held up.

3. Do worksheet grades and outside work already disagree?

   That disagreement is the usual reason families search this phrase. A short multi-form check will name the concept instead of leaving you with two conflicting percentages.

4. Are you hoping the result will certify a grade level?

   It will not. Use it as a starting point for practice, not as a transcript line.

How this family placement test is scored

The live Readiness Check is five fixed rounds, one per Algebra Foundations concept, and takes about ten minutes. Each concept is shown as equations, graphs, and tables. The learner gets one pick at each representation, then names the rule that ties them together. A wrong pick still gets feedback about that specific misconception; the round does not wait until the matching card is found, so the result reflects what they knew rather than how long they kept trying.

When the check ends, a parent report lists each concept as solid or needing practice, and whether the learner was following the steps or holding the idea. It also recommends a starting pack and a difficulty band. The report is built from those attempts and that accuracy. It does not print a named misconception sentence to you, and it is not a diagnosis or a grade-level certification.
